    I am enjoying your very well done videos pertaining to rhetoric. Your're being very reasonable with your treatment on the subject. By this I mean, there is no dogmatism, you highlight the possibility for some possible wrong headedness and thought correction. Thanks Andrew!

  • @johnwheeler4791
    @johnwheeler4791 6 годин тому

    Interesting video, with a valiant attempt at legitimizing the use and purpose of rhetoric. Perhaps I am premature in my assessment as subsequent presentations may bear out, but there is also much abuse in the use of rhetoric. I am pleased to see that certitude was clearly stated as not being constituent to rhetoric. Just because Socrates is wise, does not mean that he is inherently virtuous, he mad be wise and caddish. Also, the use of rhetoric could also be defined as "the practice of employing seemingly sound reasoning, in the defense of a conclusion that is inherently false or subjective by nature". It's an every day manifestation. It should be used responsibly but often times nefariously.

    HI Andrew, Your suggestion on writing everything down won't help me because I am preparing for a writing exam, which will be timed. Do you have any tips?

    • @WritingwithAndrew
      @WritingwithAndrew 7 годин тому

      For timed writing exams, I've learned that taking the extra time to write out an outline is time very well spent. It feels like an extra step, but it ends up saving you time in the long run because you won't have to stop and figure things out as you go. You could think of it as a more streamlined form of writing everything down--just making a plan for everything before you get started.

      If you're trying to submit from a phone or tablet, it may not work. I beleive Captcha utilizes mouse movements as part of its test. If you move your mouse like a human, it believes you. Since there is not cursor on a phone or tablet, it may not work. I thought Captcha used a different metric for phones and tablets, but I'm not an expert. Either way, if you were not trying it from a desktop computer, you could try that, it might provide better results.

      @@WritingwithAndrew 🤣! I always love your sense of humor, dude😁 Well, honestly, I wouldn't be looking for a critique since I'd already published it. I'm sure you'd find plenty to criticize, tho😅. As a non-historic literary cinematic writer, you'd think I'd be in the sweet spot. _Nnnnope._ While I have received some over-the-top high praise from a few scholarly types, readers generally don't dig my flow. My writing tends to be on the outside; not conformant enough for genre readers, not "high-brow" enough for literary readers. Yet I'm using a lot of devices even in the first chapter that readers have yet to detect. For example, I'm using white room syndrome, head hopping, and mirroring in unconventional ways, "spatialism" that could be disorienting for genre readers (they have to reread passages several times), and symbolism and subtext that, frankly, no one has picked up on. So, I'm pretty much moving on from promoting my work, and am iffy about publishing another novel... though my wife would be mad at me if I don't continue the series. Anyway, all that to say that I'll submit it if you think it might be useful to you. I'll just send the first chapter, but feel free to say that it got lost in the (e)mail😅

      @WritingwithAndrew 3 дні тому

      I don't know that this type of thing is very standard (collecting viewer submissions), but, yes--it's inspired by the kinds of agreements that literary publications often use: the idea is that you're giving me permission to reproduce whatever you submit (e.g., in a video) but that there are no restrictions on what you do with it from there (i.e., if I use it, that doesn't mean you can't publish it somewhere else on your own). Of course, I am not the lawyer, but that's my paraphrase of the agreement (and it's the language there that actually counts)
